Giving a Damn Downtown
The Boys and Girls Club Gets a Boost
The most recent meeting for the St. John’s chapter of 100 Men Who Give a Damn took place at the Celtic Hearth on Water Street on October 22. A huge thank you goes out to the kitchen staff and servers for providing some delicious food: the seafood and cream cheese lollipops were definitely a crowd favourite!
A Fresh Start
The meeting at the Celtic Hearth marked the first meeting of 100 Men NL’s second year. It was great to see members coming out, having a pint together, and catching up. As much as 100 Men is about helping local charities, another great aspect is its ability to bring people together and create new relationships. We look forward to seeing even more men come out to our next meeting.
To open the meeting, we heard from Ellen Foley, a representative from Kids Help Phone, who detailed how our last donation was able to help their organization. The Kids Help Phone was the recipient of the massive donation given in a joint effort between 100 Men Who Give a Damn and 100 Women Who Care. The money is being put to good use by helping to establish a service for teen males, a demographic the organization feels is underrepresented and in need of updated services. It is great to see our donations being used for such positive purposes.
We next heard from the three nominated charities: The Boys and Girls Club of St. John’s, Special Olympics NL, and the Newfoundland & Labrador Association for Community Living. Each gave their pitch and after hearing about all the good that these organizations are doing, it was definitely a touch decision for everyone in attendance. Ultimately, a winner was chosen and the Boys and Girls Club of St. John’s was awarded with the donation.
Be sure to stay tuned for details about our next meeting and the announcement of the next 3 nominated charities.
